Basketball Court Dimensions
Every measurement that defines a basketball court, by level of play — and what those numbers mean when you are fitting a court into a driveway or a backyard.
Basketball is unusual among sports in that one measurement never changes. The rim is 10 feet above the playing surface in the NBA, the WNBA, NCAA, FIBA, and high school play. Almost everything else — court length, lane width, the three-point line — varies by level, and the differences are large enough to matter when you are laying out a court at home.
This page collects the official numbers in one place, then translates them into what actually fits on residential property.

FIBA measures in metres, so the imperial figures are conversions rather than the governing number. A FIBA court is roughly two feet narrower and two feet shorter than an NBA court.
Half court
A half court is exactly what the name says: the court divided at the centre line. From a 94-foot court that gives 47 by 50 feet. From an 84-foot high school court it gives 42 by 50 feet. Both are still substantial — a 47 by 50 half court is about 2,350 square feet, larger than many houses' entire footprint.
FIBA also codifies a smaller single-basket format. A 3x3 court is 15 by 11 metres (roughly 49 by 36 feet), using one basket and a half-court key. It is the closest official standard to what most residential courts actually resemble.
The Key, the Free-Throw Line, and the Restricted Area

FIBA positions the free-throw line by its distance from the endline (5.80 m) rather than from the backboard. The restricted-area arc — the no-charge semicircle under the basket — does not exist in NFHS high school play.
The 15-foot free-throw measurement is worth noting because it is taken from the face of the backboard, not from the rim. Since the centre of the rim sits 15 inches out from the backboard, the actual distance from the free-throw line to the centre of the basket is 13 feet 9 inches. Anyone laying out a court by measuring from the pole or the rim will end up with a free-throw line in the wrong place.
The Three-Point Line
This is the measurement that has changed most in recent decades, and the one that varies most between levels.

All three-point distances are measured from the centre of the basket, not the backboard. NCAA men adopted the international distance for the 2019–20 season; NCAA women followed for 2021–22. The NBA arc is straight-sided for 14 feet out from the baseline, which is why the corner distance is shorter than the arc.
For residential planning, the high school line at 19 feet 9 inches is usually the one that matters. It is the distance most players learn on, and it is the only one that reliably fits a residential court. A corner three at 19 ft 9 in still needs close to 30 feet of court width to leave room on both sides of the shooter.

Backboard width changes how the court plays more than most people expect
The shooter's square is 24 inches wide regardless of backboard size, so bank shots are unaffected. What changes is the rebound area and the visual reference on angled shots. A 72-inch board gives roughly 24 inches of glass on each side of the square; a 54-inch board gives about 15. On a narrow driveway a 54- or 60-inch board is often the right call for clearance reasons, and that is a spatial decision, not a compromise on the rim height or the square.
Space Around the Court
Official dimensions describe the playing surface only. Every governing body also specifies clear space beyond the lines, and this is the figure most often left out of residential planning.
- FIBA requires 2 metres (about 6 ft 7 in) of unobstructed space around the entire playing court.
- NCAA and NFHS call for a minimum of 3 feet of unobstructed space outside the boundary lines, with 10 feet preferred.
- High school ceiling height for indoor play is specified at a 24-foot minimum — a useful reference for anyone considering a covered or barn court.
A 94 by 50 foot court with the FIBA run-off allowance needs a pad closer to 107 by 63 feet. That gap between "court size" and "space required" is why so many residential projects come in smaller than planned.
What Actually Fits at Home
Most residential courts are shooting surfaces rather than scaled regulation courts — and for the play that actually happens on them, that is the right trade.
Very few homes can accommodate a regulation court. The useful question is not "how do I fit 94 by 50 feet" but "what does the play I want require."

For context, a standard two-car driveway apron is commonly 18 to 24 feet wide, and a two-car garage door is 16 feet. Measure yours before assuming a category.
Two adjustments make small courts play far better than their dimensions suggest:
- Scale the markings, not the rim. Rim height stays at 10 feet, always. A shortened three-point line or a narrowed key is a reasonable adaptation to available space; a lowered rim on a permanent court is not, because players calibrate to it and then cannot shoot anywhere else.
- Prioritise depth over width. If you have to choose, depth in front of the backboard buys more usable basketball than width. Width mainly adds corner shots; depth adds every shot from the key outward, plus room to drive.
Court Surfaces
Surface affects ball behaviour, injury risk, and maintenance, and each type behaves differently outdoors.
- Hardwood is the indoor standard for NBA, NCAA, and high school competition. Maple is typical. It is not an outdoor material.
- Concrete is the most common residential playing surface. Residential pads run about 4 inches thick, with 5 to 6 inches and reinforcement where vehicles park. It is hard on joints but dimensionally stable and low-maintenance.
- Asphalt is common on driveways and neighbourhood courts. It is slightly more forgiving than concrete and less expensive to place, but it is flexible, softens in heat, and needs periodic sealing.
- Modular plastic tile snaps over a concrete or asphalt base. The suspended surface reduces impact and drains through, and individual tiles can be replaced.
- Poured rubber and cushioned acrylic systems add a shock-absorbing layer between the base and the wear coat, at higher cost.
- Turf is not a basketball surface — a ball will not dribble reliably on it — though a hoop's footing can be set flush in turf beside a hard surface.
Whatever the surface, the anchor goes in concrete
The playing surface and the anchoring structure are separate decisions. An in-ground pole is set in a concrete footing sized by the manufacturer's instructions and extended below the local frost depth. On asphalt, pavers, or tile, that means cutting the surface and pouring a footing beneath it. Asphalt alone will not hold an in-ground system.
Laying Out a Court Accurately
- Establish the backboard face first — every forward measurement references it, not the pole
- Mark the centre of the rim 15 inches out from the backboard face; three-point and free-throw arcs are struck from there
- Free-throw line at 15 feet from the backboard face, lane 12 feet wide for high school and college markings
- Three-point arc at 19 ft 9 in for high school play, measured from the rim centre
- All lines 2 inches wide
- Square the court with diagonal measurements, not by eye — equal diagonals mean square corners
- Confirm the surface is close to level, with 1 to 2 percent drainage slope away from the house and footing
- Add run-off space outside the lines before finalising the pad size
Bringing It Together
The official dimensions are worth knowing because they explain why courts feel the way they do — why a corner three is shorter than one from the top, why the NBA key looks wider, why a 15-foot free throw is not 15 feet from the rim. But almost no residential court is a regulation court, and it does not need to be.
Measure your space honestly, keep the rim at 10 feet, mark what fits, and leave run-off room outside the lines. That produces a court people use.
